ROAM

ROAM is a GPS waypoint and track logging app. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and the choices you have. The short version: your data exists so the app can work for you — we do not sell it or use it for advertising.

Information we collect

Account information. When you sign in (email, Google, or Apple), our authentication provider, Clerk, processes your email address, name, and optional profile photo to create and secure your account.
Location data. ROAM records GPS locations only when you use its features — saving a waypoint, recording a track, or viewing the map. If you enable background tracking or live location sharing, the app continues recording while it is in the background, and shows an indicator as required by iOS. Location is not used for advertising. For the usage reporting described below, the app derives broad one-degree map areas on your device; exact coordinates and route shapes are not included in analytics records. Recording, syncing, and live sharing handle location separately to provide the features you request.
Content you create. Waypoints, tracks, folders, notes, and photos you attach. These are stored on your device and synced to our servers so they follow your account across devices.
Purchase information. Pro subscriptions are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat. We receive subscription status (for example, "Pro active"), never your payment card details.
AI search queries. If you use the AI Explore search, the text of your query (and approximate map area) is sent to an AI service to produce results. Queries are not used to identify you.
US-location usage analytics. Beginning with the app update introducing these reports, ROAM automatically records successful trail imports, completed offline map downloads, and created sharing links associated with US locations. Saved recordings contribute only a broad area event for the popular-area report, not recording totals or distance/time averages. Opening or canceling a sharing window does not count as creating a link.
Analytics details. Records include an event identifier, calendar day, action type, US-location designation, and, where applicable, a one-degree map area and public trail name, identifier, and forest or park. A one-degree area is about 69 miles north to south, with varying width. No exact GPS coordinates, route shapes, recorded distances or durations, private names, photos, notes, or searches are included in these analytics records. Unknown or non-US activity locations are excluded using a local geographic boundary check; this check is approximate, particularly near borders and coastlines. This geographic filter concerns the location associated with the activity, not your citizenship, residence, or physical location when using ROAM.
Account association. Analytics records are linked to an internal account identifier and are not fully anonymous. Account association supports test-account exclusions, account deletion, and handling privacy requests. Email addresses are not included in the analytics event records.

How your information is used

To provide the app's core features: saving and syncing waypoints, tracks, photos, and offline maps.
To keep you signed in and secure your account.
To unlock Pro features when you subscribe.
To operate optional features you actively use, such as live location sharing and trail search.
To produce private administrator reports for the previous 90 calendar days: imported-trail counts, the five most-imported public trails and their forest or park, the five most-used broad recording/import areas, completed map-download counts, and created sharing-link counts. These reports help us understand feature use and plan improvements. Historical saved tracks are not used to reconstruct analytics from before this update.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their marketing.

Service providers

ROAM relies on a small number of services to function, each receiving only what it needs: Clerk (sign-in and accounts), RevenueCat and Apple (subscriptions), Mapbox (map display and offline map downloads), map data sources such as OpenStreetMap and U.S. government trail services (search queries only), and our hosting provider (Replit) which stores synced app data and usage records on our behalf. These usage records are not sold, shared with data brokers, or combined with activity from other companies' apps for targeted advertising.

Sharing you control

Features like live location sharing and exporting/sharing files (.roam, GPX) send data only when you choose to use them, and only to the people you share with. Stopping a live share ends the sharing.

Data retention & deletion

Your synced data is kept while your account is active. You can delete waypoints, tracks, folders, and photos in the app at any time — deletions sync to our servers. To delete your entire account and its data, use the account options in Settings or contact us below.

Usage reports include only the most recent 90 calendar days. Expired usage records are excluded from reports and removed by automatic cleanup when the service starts, during usage requests, and daily while it is running. If the service is stopped, physical cleanup resumes when it next starts. Account deletion also removes the account's usage records.

You may request deletion of usage records or exercise applicable privacy rights, including an applicable right to object, through ROAM Support. Requests are handled according to applicable law. This policy describes our data practices; it does not waive your privacy rights.

Children

ROAM is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this page with a new "Last updated" date.
